Utah Valley women’s basketball team did something they haven’t done since Dec. 29, 2008. They eclipsed the 100- point mark as they defeated Walla Walla University 104-46, Tuesday night. The Wolverines did so with six players scoring in double figures and they were paced by 14 points from Taylor Huber.

The Wolverines did most of their damage around the basket as they finished with 58 points in the paint. Erika Newbold came out hot as she scored the first five points for UVU. She was a force to be reckoned with inside which forced the Walla Walla defenders to collapse, leaving players with open shots.

The Wolverines had struggled with their shot this season as they were shooting 35.7 percent from the floor and 25.9 percent from behind the 3- point line coming into Tuesday’s game. They enjoyed a nice turnaround as the Walla Walla defense allowed them to shoot 42.9 percent from deep and 52.4 percent overall. Huber’s 14 points and 4 made 3-pointers were a huge boost tonight for the team.

“ We have shoot around before our game, so I just get a lot of shots up then to try and get warm and get ready to shoot, ‘cause that’s what I like to do,” Huber said.

Jenna Johnson shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to help UVU along in the good shooting night andpoint guard Cydne Mason led the team and set up the offense to find good, open looks. A lot of the bench was used as they scored 59 points and three reserves scored in double figures.

While Coach Nixon said she didn’t like seeing 16 turnovers from her team, the Wolverines had a school-record 32 assists. The Wolverines were also helped by forcing Walla Walla into 24 turnovers. They capitalized off of these turnovers with 40 points.

The ride a two- game winning streak into conference play as they head to Grand Forks and take on North Dakota University.
