Softball’s Amanda Robinson wins Great West weekly honor

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Utah Valley’s Amanda Robinson has been named the Great West Conference Softball Player of the Week after an outstanding performance on the diamond last week, April 3-9.

Robinson, a freshman from Lakewood, Calif., hit .500 for the week as she went 7-for-14 with two home runs, scored five runs and drove home four. The outfielder slugged an even 1.000 and had an on-base percentage of .533 while leading UVU to a 3-2 record on the week, including a 3-1 record at Portland State and a loss at Utah. Robinson is hitting .314 for the season with five home runs, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored.

The weekly honor is Robinson’s first of the season.

Softball’s Summers earns third PCSC pitching weekly award

PORTLAND, Ore. – Utah Valley freshman Josi Summers has been named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Mountain Division Pitcher of the Week for the third time in four weeks. The award was announced April 12 by the league office.

Summers, a right-hander from Tremonton, Utah, went 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA (16.0 IP, 8 ER) to earn her third PCSC Pitcher of the Week honor of the season. In the Wolverines’ 3-1 series win over Portland State, Summers went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA (14.0 IP, 1 ER) and struck out eight while walking none in two starts. In her final outing of the series, she pitched a four-hit shutout against last year’s Mountain Division champs. She entered last week 7-10 with a 4.18 ERA (92.0 IP, 55 ER) in 19 appearances, including 16 starts.

Baseball’s Gendlek named GWC Pitcher of the Week for second time

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Utah Valley junior Jeremy Gendlek was named the Great West Conference Pitcher of the Week on April 12 after his record-setting performance on April 9 at NJIT. Northern Colorado’s Jarod Berggren was named the GWC Player of the Week.

Gendlek started and pitched a UVU Division I school record of 10-innings in an 11-inning, 2-0, victory over conference foe NJIT over the weekend. The right-handed hurler scattered six hits and struck out a career-high eight Highlanders while walking just three. Gendlek, who did not allow a run, improved to 2-3 and lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.44 on the year.

It’s the second time this season that Gendlek has earned the award and the fourth time for a Wolverine pitcher.

Men’s Golf’s Casper named America Sky Golfer of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – For the second time this season, Utah Valley University golfer Mason Casper has been named the America Sky Men’s Golf Conference Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced April 14.

Casper, a sophomore from Springville, Utah, finished in a tie for fifth at the University of Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational April 9-10 in Lexington, Ky.

Casper, who claimed his second top-5 finish of the spring, fired rounds of 73-71-73 for a four-over score of 218. Amongst the tough competition, which included nationally-ranked Auburn, Casper rallied from 10th place after two rounds.

He was named the ASC Golfer of the Week the first time for winning the SUU Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in his first-ever career start.
