Grant a wish for Japan

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Students will have the opportunity to make paper cranes like these as part of a fundraiser to raise money for Japan.

Across campus, students will have a chance to donate money to offer relief to Japan, which was recently struck by a tsunami.

The fundraiser will run Monday, March 21 through Friday, March 25.

The goal of the fundraiser is to have every student donate a dollar, which would raise around $30,000.

The fundraiser will be held around campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the commons, in the Hall of Flags and at WB 147. It is being put together by the Japanese Club and International Student Council at UVU.

Students will have the opportunity to fold a thousand paper cranes, as part of the fundraiser, and have their names written on the back. The cranes will then be strung together in groups of a thousand, called a Sadako, and once strung together, Japan will be granted a wish, according to Japanese believe.

There are 39 students at UVU from Japan according to Junko Watabe who is the advisor for the Japanese club. Most of their families have been accounted for. However, there is at least one student that has a  friend who has been reported dead.
