At the stroke of noon on Monday, Sept. 13, Centre Stage was filled with hundreds of hungry and curious students eager to take part in the Multicultural Center’s monthly “Taste of Culture” event.

This month’s focus was on the six islands groups of Polynesia. In the presence of these traditions, one could feel the warmth that is always associated with the Polynesian people’s respectful demeanor and lively spirit.

Centre Stage was decorated with colorful lava-lavas and the mood was set with soothing island music. Guests were invited to partake in a free lunch that consisted of steamed rice, pulled BBQ pork and guava cake that attracted a lengthy line.

For entertainment, there was an elegant solo dance performance and a duo who portrayed the way of life in Tahiti through dance. Half a dozen male students complimented the ladies by running through an engaging war chant accompanied by scores of stomps.

The afternoon’s event concluded with the invitation of male papalagis (white people) up to the stage for a tutorial in the dancing style that was previously demonstrated. This time the chanting included humorous English phrases such as, “If you have a girlfriend hold her tight. If she spends your money throw her away.”

All in all, the Multicultural Center put on an event that will not be easily forgotten. It was enjoyable and edifying, to say the very least. It began with a welcoming “Aloha!” and ended in the same friendly way. It would be difficult to expect anything less from these amazing, jovial Island People.

Next month is scheduled to showcase the rich Latino culture. Look forward to it!
