Lady Wolverines get win but struggle in GWC

Last week the Lady Wolverines got thier first win in ten games with a 15-point victory over Longwood, but they have yet to win a conference game, having lost to South Dakota later in that week.

Sophomore Jenna Johnson led the Wolverines in scoring during both games, finishing with 24 points against Longwood and 17 against South Dakota with two of her shots from beyond the arc.

Against South Dakota, the Wolverines went nearly three minutes into the first half without a score on the board, trailing the Coyotes by eight points. UVU slowly caught up to South Dakota holding them at 15 for nearly five minutes while they took a small lead.

With 13 seconds left in the first half, the Wolverines had a two-point lead before South Dakota got a quick layup at the buzzer to tie the score at 28.

In the second half UVU never saw a lead again. South Dakota took the win 65-56, putting them 1-1 in the Great West Conference and UVU 0-3.

Asumi Nakayama finished with 11 points, four assists and three rebounds. Freshman Kaycee Mansfield came off the bench to score eight points and pull down seven rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Both Kayla Burningham and Erika Newbold finished with seven points each.

The Wolverines will now head out on the road to play two conference games against Chicago State Jan. 28 in the second meeting this season and against NJIT on Jan. 30. They will return to home court on Feb. 4 to face off with Texas-Pan American.
