Those long, weekend nights spent studying in the crawlspace known as a dorm room may soon be over for many students as the library announces the extension of its hours during finals.

During the weekends of Dec. 5-6 and Dec. 12-13 the library will be open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. The change, created to aide students in their studying philosophies and resources, has been a long time coming.

“The extended hours are a response to student’s requests over time,” said Library Director Michael Freeman. “It seems that students will respond positively to extended hours just prior to finals, as that is when most students are typically under the gun to finish semester projects and study for tests.”

With state-of-the-art facilities, group study rooms, and wireless internet access throughout the library, students are excited to be able to put the library’s resources to good use.

“It is going to benefit students greatly,” said Annette Marvin, an Exercise Science major. “I have found myself in the library until closing time on weekdays and it helped a ton with my studies to have those extra hours.”

By creating extended hours on the weekend, the library hopes to accommodate those students who may not have the opportunity during the week to study at the facility because of work and other commitments.

“Saturday is a big day to study because a lot of students work during the week,” said Bryn Nelson, an International Business major. “Studying in the library helps you get away from all the distractions that happen on the weekend.” While the extended hours for this semester are only temporary, the library sees this change as a perfect test run to see if the hours should become permanent.

“We’ll be taking gate counts throughout the day to see how many people come,” Freeman said. “This is an experiment, but would likely become a permanent idea if proved successful.”
