Alex Caldiero, scholar-in-residence for the philosophy and humanities departments, will perform at Mestizo coffee house in Salt Lake this Saturday. He will also perform a piece called “The Cart Before the Horse: An Experiment in Radical Pedagogy” in LA 127 this Wednesday.

Caldiero, described by the Mestizo as a “Sonosopher, wordshaker, polyartist, and scholar of humanities and intermedia,” has verbally performed his stylistic writings on campus several times during the last school year.

Caldiero’s audiences are generally anchored by a core group of his current and former students as well as locals from both Utah and Salt Lake counties. However, many other students and faculty members also stop in to appreciate his unique, moving performances.
Expectations are pointless at a Caldiero performance; the polyartist has a repertoire which includes poetry recitation, art, and instruments to share his views on society, the nature of the human mind and interpersonal relationships, among other things.

The Mestizo coffee house doubles as an art gallery, and is the interim center of the Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts.
According to MestizoArts.org the MICA’s mission is to “strengthen and build communities through art while advancing the discussion of Chicana/o, Latina/o, Indigenous, cross-cultural experiences and those who live in the borderlands (physically, spiritually, or psychologicially).”
