UVU merits

To the editor,

Having attended two universities before UVU, I have to say that this university does an incredible job catering to its students. I think that it is a joke when people complain about parking, because it doesn’t get any better than this anywhere else. My class sizes have been much smaller here, and I feel that I have learned much more because I have received so much more attention from my teachers. While registering for classes for the first time, I was surprised at the ease of choosing classes and the myriad of options to get the exact one that I wanted, during the time slot that I wanted it. I feel like I should take this opportunity to commend the university and tell them to keep up the good work. This is what keeps me coming to UVU.

Poor Economy, Budget Cuts Kill UVU Preschool Program

A few weeks ago, there was an article in the UVU Review discussing some effects the poor economy will be having on UVU in the near future.?The article discussed how professors within a few years of retirement may be offered an opportunity to retire early, how tuition may rise and how certain university programs may be limited or even cut. I myself have been unemployed for close to 3 months and am trying to support a family and pay for a mortgage on unemployment and student loans. When I first read the article it was sad but unfortunately made sense.?I mean, most of the globe is cutting budgets, and many are continuing to cut more and more.? However, it really didn’t hit that close to home until I was dropping my 4 year-old child off at the UVU Preschool (taught in the UVU education building primarily by UVU education students) and I received a letter informing me that?due to legislative cuts to UVU’s budget, effective this coming summer semester, UVU would regrettably?be forced to discontinue its preschool program.?Fortunately, our 4 year-old will?be finished with the program by that time; however, our?3 year-old who we were hoping to?get?into the program will no longer?have that opportunity. We recently moved from Texas where the?local school district provided a?wonderful free preschool as part of the elementary school for language-based and title one children.??However, in Utah we have found that?language-based?opportunities are only offered for children with serious learning disabilities and title one opportunities are only offered to students living in title one areas.?I don’t know how or why the location of your residence is a better indicator of your income than your actual income, but for some reason, in Utah, it is.? We do not want to sound?ungracious because we are very thankful that our 4 year-old is currently able to attend preschool, and we will hope that with the help of our new President and?new secretary of education, things will happen and changes will be made in order?for our 3 year-old to attend some sort of pre-school sometime in the next two years.
