Lady Wolverines get crucial first road victory at SUU

The trip south on I-15 to Cedar City last week for the women’s basketball team for its first road game of the season meant the team’s first-ever win at Southern Utah, 75-55, and its first-ever 3-0 start.

One thing the Wolverines have struggled with in the past has been finding a way to win on the road, as they have only five victories away from the McKay Events Center over the past five seasons, since jumping to Division I Athletics.

Last year was by far Utah Valley’s best season on the road. They went 4-7, finishing the 2006-07 season 15-13.

Utah Valley coach Cathy Nixon was pleased with the victory: "We really felt that winning on the road was very important for us to be successful this season. We’ve really struggled on the road in years past, and it feels good to get the win against an in-state opponent, at that."

The Wolverines play continues to impress, as they have won their third consecutive game by 20 points or more as they downed the Thunderbirds, their latest casualty.

"The Big Three," consisting of Sandy Marvin, Robyn Fairbanks, and Julie McMurray, continue to shine for Utah Valley, as all three wound up in double figures.

Led once again by the ever-so-versatile sophomore forward, Julie McMurray, tying her career-high with 23 points.

Junior shooting guard Sandy Marvin put up 21; and the most reliable Wolverine, junior center, Robyn Fairbanks, added 13.
Utah Valley finished with four players in double figures scoring as the senior forward, "Big Shot Bekah" Rebekah Peterson, had 10 points, as well.

Utah Valley’s first-ever win at Southern Utah improves its all-time record against the Thunderbirds to 2-3.

The Wolverines hope that this season will be their breakout year as they are continuing to have consistent play on all ends of the floor.

Utah Valley has 10 contributors on the team this year that are all stepping up.

With only two seniors Utah Valley will only look to improve for the next couple of years.

Up next, the Lady Wolverines host the Big East’s Seton Hall the day before Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. in the McKay Events Center.

Their next road test will be Saturday, Nov. 24, in Logan against Utah State at 7 p.m.
